From big-city commutes to cross-country vacations, Americans are traveling some very well-worn roads. The average age of U.S. highways and streets in 2016 was 28.7 years, the oldest in records dating back to 1925, according to Bureau of Economic Analysis figures, as government spending on new civil projects lags. What’s worse, in the three years through 2016, the average age of roadways has increased by the most since 1946.
